Snafflez is…

03 Dec

“Snafflez” is a simple website where you can create a horse, design a pony, choose colours and dress your horse to look like your own.

Once upon a time I couldn’t decide which colour saddlepad would look best on my horse. So I made this low-tech web-based tack picking tool where you can design a horse by choosing body colours, mane, tail, markings. It’s like a virtual horse paper doll where you can dress it up and experiment with different colours of tack. You can use it to try on colours for your own horse, design your custom stable colours, recreate a cartoon version of your own pony and/or to make an avatar or signature graphic.  I tried to stay true to the tack and colours you can actually buy.  Find out more!

Or go directly to your favourite Horse Dress Up Page

Note: Only one of these works on touch-screen devices at this time.

Customized Horse Wear: Where to get it for real?

14 Mar

As you all know, the primary purpose of Snafflez is for testing out different colour schemes to see what tack looks best on particular colours of horses.

Black horse in Teal Blanket

User submitted design of black horse wearing a teal cooler with mint accents and a mint coloured halter.

Horse wear, including blankets or rugs, come in a wide variety of colour combinations. You can use the Snafflez Horsewear pages, also known as the Horse Show Colour or Stable Colour pickers, to recreate existing manufactured blanket or rug patterns as close as possible, or to create your own customized design.

There are two different Snafflez Horsemaker pages you can use for trying out blankets/rugs and halters. The Drag and Drop Horsewear Page has the advantage of more white markings for horses, a feature which requires being able to drag and drop, and the ability to fine tune the placement of emblems on the blanket.

On the Click and Pick Horsewear Page, there are a lot more options in trim and decorative or functional features you can add to your horse’s wardrobe, and all you have to do is play around clicking to turn various elements — such as shoulder gussets or zebra patterns — “on” or “off” and can more rapidly try on all these combinations. And this one even works on touch screen devices and mobile devices such as cell phones.

Now what if you have created your own fabulous custom design, and none of the mass-produced blankets come that way?

Well, the design team at Snafflez (that’s me) are sticklers for realism. That not only means that we tried to make it possible to recreate many of the manufactured blankets you can buy in shops, but also that we wouldn’t have made it possible for you to play with custom show cooler designs if we didn’t already know where you can order them.

There are plenty of great businesses that offer custom embroidery or even custom dress sheets where you can order your own colours, custom piping, straps, and buckles at very affordable prices. But the following list of companies can make you the kind of custom horsewear that really stands out.

In the UK:

Nagrags – Not only fabulous custom horse wear, but very fabulous custom cross country gear as well.

In North America:

Snug Rugz – Based in British Columbia, Snug Rugz make some very pretty show sheets, and made the gear for the Canadian Olympic team a few years ago.

Brubachers Harness – Based in Ontario, Brubachers makes high quality blankets and custom show coolers, among other things.

Saratoga Horseworks – Based in New York, and makes more than blankets as well. They outfitted the American Olympic team.

Royal Riders – Home of the “Blue Ribbon” Custom Blankets, and can do a whole horse show package with stall drapes.

Using Snafflez pictures

28 Nov

I often get asked about where people can use the pictures they make on this site. More often, people just go ahead and do things without asking.

Here’s a tip for life: If you don’t know, ask. Seriously.

I let everyone use this site for free. You can use the pictures you make here for RPGs, avatars on forums, Facebook, whatever. All I ask is that if you DO use the pictures from this site, you credit the website accordingly. If you can, put the website name in the picture itself, so it can’t be stolen from you either.

And if you are using the pictures in any kind of advertisement or product that is going to make YOU, or your organization/barn/club/whatever, real money, you need to ask permission from me: snafflez@gmail.com.

I know when you use the pictures off this site. I know when someone uses them to advertise a tack sale in Cambridge, Ontario, on Kijiji.ca, and the site is not credited.

It is such a simple thing to ask permission and give credit.

The Internet, with the Google and Yandex search engines, with Tumblr and Pinterest and Facebook, makes it easy to find pictures that are far removed from their sources. But part of being a good citizen of the Internet is knowing HOW to check on where a picture came from, and reattach the appropriate credit before forwarding or using it.

Tip: Google lets you paste in the URL of a picture you have found, and it will search for all other sources of the same picture. Do that, and you will find the original source.

I also do ask that people NOT use the images out of the Submissions gallery unless you were the one that made that image. If I continue to get complaints about people “stealing” images posted in that gallery, either the gallery will have to be taken down, or watermarks added to all the images.

It should go without saying that putting this site together was a lot of work. It is fun, but it doesn’t pay my bills. I get a tiny bit of revenue from the ads on the site, and that is what helps keep this site online, but it doesn’t even cover that.

Keep it fun.

A how-to-edit video series made by a fan

19 Aug

Sorry not much updates lately, it’s been a busy couple of weeks. I have been working on more touch-screen-friendly “click to pick” style horse dress up versions (with much cooler saddle pad customization) but it’s one of those things that can’t really be uploaded until it is really ready, and it just isn’t ready quite yet.

In the meantime, there’s been a surge in cool edits and customizations being uploaded! Here’s a very detailed instructional video someone has made on how to do the edits yourself:

Keep creating and keep riding. :)

How do YOU use Snafflez?

03 Aug

I love this. I love seeing how people have used this site to create something for themselves.

It is great to see people enjoying the site. Whether you’re using it as it was originally intended — to pick the best colour to match your horse — or using it for avatars, fantasies, and roleplay.

Seeing things like this are what keep me doing this. I don’t get anything else out of it, other than the tiny amount of revenue from the ads on this site (and it is tiny, but thankfully it is usually enough to cover the sitehosting bill). I just like knowing that it has been useful to someone, in some way, even if just to kill boredom sometime.

You know, when you can’t be riding instead.

Touch Screens and more about the new Horsewear Horsemaker

31 Jul

You can now customize your horsewear colours with a new kind of horsemaker. Less dragging… more clicking. And it even works on touch-screen devices and smartphones. I tested it on BlackBerry 7, PlayBook, iPhone/iPod/iPad.

Click the tabs to see each section, and click the colour squares to see your choices appear on the horse. Makes testing different colours even easier — you can just keep clicking colour swatches until you find a combo you like.

If you don’t like your selection, you need to click the “x” to remove it.

Go now:  http://www.snafflez.com/horsemaker/m_horsewear.html

Other things which are new in this version of the Horsewear Horsemaker (and not found anywhere else):

  • halter padding
  • halter overlays
  • different kinds of surcingles and belly straps
  • more customized trim for sheets

And on all the Horsemakers, you should find a lot more country flags. And Olympic rings.

Summer Olympics 2012!

30 Jul

Photos from London are starting to make their way onto the Internet. It will be fun to see how each country will attire their equine athletes!  Check out Team Canada’s snazzy coolers in (what else?!) patriotic Red and White at Horse Junkies United!

This is the closest my mare will ever get to going to the Olympics. Unless somebody buys her a ticket, that is. (I’m not sure, but I think that the Canadian sheets are made by Snug Rugz)

How about Team USA? I believe their coolers were provided by Saratoga Horseworks.

I’m trying something new. I think this new version of the horse show colours horsemaker actually works on touch screen devices! It’s a bit rough around the edges for now, but have at ‘er.

Send me your Olympic-inspired Snafflez horses and include the word “olympics” in either the filename or the description, and you’ll see it added here:

Endurance & Trail Horse Tack

21 Jul

Whew! It’s been a hot summer, too hot for computers. And I’ve been busy horse-showing and such. BUT! I do have some new stuff uploaded. It’s the Endurance & Trail Horsemaker, and it has tonnes of colours for tack! You can use this page to “build your own bridle” and mix and match different colours of headstalls, cavessons, and browbands. And when I say colours, I mean not just leather colours but also synthetic colours that you see in Nylon or Biothane tack. Match them up with cruppers and breastplates in the real colours that are available from popular brands like Zilco and Toklat. There are also hoof boots from Cavallo, Easy Boot, Renegade.

Australian and Endurance saddles and pads to come! Also saddle bags, packs, etc.

Congratulations to the Canadian YR Endurance team for winning Team Gold at the 2012 NAJYRC in Kentucky yesterday!
